Diana of Dobson's

by Cicely Hamilton

What a difference a little money makes…

"The play that became a classic statement for the women’s rights movement."

“A comic tale of a charismatic young woman who strives for independence in a world ruled by class and gender.”

Long days, pitiful pay, and no pleasure. Diana leads a dreary life as a shop-girl at Dobson’s Emporium. Until, that is, she is left a legacy of £300. Rather than saving or investing it sensibly, she decides to blow it all on fine clothes and a holiday at the best hotel in Switzerland. She finds herself in the Alps pursued by two men who are fascinated by her strength and audacity and, they presume, her wealth.

Cicely Hamilton was a successful actress, writer and campaigner for women’s rights. She is celebrated for writing the lyrics of the anthem for the Suffragette movement, ‘The March of the Women.’

“Life, strife – these two are one,
Naught can ye win but by faith and daring.”

A rare and daring revival of this gem of the Edwardian theatre. Hamilton’s work is as relevant today as it ever was.
